He served in the National Fire Service at Broadway during the Second World
War.
Then as now the Broadway brigade members were on call from either their
homes or their work during the day time. But during the night, for some
of the war at least, they took turns to sleep at Charles Stewart's builders
yard which was being used as a temporary fire station.
