This section describes a number of fires which occurred in Broadway and the surrounding area over a period of almost two hundred years. Some happened long before there were any fire fighting facilities to call on.
Some incidents are notable for having made people aware of how important it is to have a fully equipped, and up to date fire brigade available. As in modern times, it often took a major incident, and the resulting public outcry, to force those in authority to take action.
